Eugene F Meier

Eugene “Gene” Meier, age 80, of Elma, IA formerly of Cresco, IA passed away on Monday, December 26, 2022 at Howard County Regional Health.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, December 30, 2022 at Immaculate Conception Church in Elma with Father Jerry Kopacek celebrating the mass.  Visitation will be held from 9:30 – 11:00 AM at the church on Friday. Burial will be held at Calvary Cemetery in Elma with military rites provided by Cresco American Legion.

Eugene Francis was born March 31, 1942, the son of Arnold and Clementine (Maravetz) Meier.  He attended and graduated from Immaculate Conception Academy in Elma.  After graduation, Gene began working for Oliver White in Charles City, IA.  He was engaged with farming along-side his father.  In 1964, Gene enlisted in the National Guard where he served his country until he received his honorable discharge in 1968.  Gene went on to attend college at NIACC and later a community college in Trinidad, CO.  He worked in Colorado until returning to Iowa in 1983.  Gene moved to Decorah, IA where he lived for a number of years before settling in Cresco.

Gene spent his time volunteering at the library and visiting residents at nursing homes.  He enjoyed reading and listening to music.  Gene was always fond of family get-togethers and visiting with his nephews.  He was an active member of his church.

Those left to honor Gene’s memory are his sister, Dorothy (Lawrence) Schmitt of Riceville, IA; his nephews, Joe (Nicci) Schmitt, Chris Schmitt, Tom (Katie) Schmitt and Stephen (Courtney) Schmitt; and several extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arnold and Clementine and his brother, Allan Meier.
