Marie O. Denner

January 26, 1931 ~ July 20, 2013
Marie O. Denner age 82, of New Hampton, IA, passed away on Saturday, July 20, 2013 at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton. Marie Ollie (Beck) Denner was born on January 26, 1931 near Nashua to Roy and Louise (Rabe) Beck and moved to New Hampton in 1932. She was baptized on November 15, 1931 and confirmed on April 23, 1944 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church (now Trinity Lutheran Church) and active in Luther League. She attended schools in New Hampton and University of Northern Iowa. After completing her teacher’s certificate she taught in rural school. She was a lifetime and active member in the Women of the ELCA. On August 20, 1950, Marie was united in marriage to Virgil Denner. The couple farmed and gardened for 45 years before moving to New Hampton. They were the parents of five children. Marie was active with her family in 4-H; being a leader for 10 years, on the County Extension Committee, superintendent for many years, honorary 4-H member, 4-H family of the year, and a member and on the board of the Cattlewomen. She enjoyed Friendship Club and Putter Pals. Marie also enjoyed canning, baking and cooking. Many times what she fixed was shared with others besides her family. Time spent with her family and friends, sharing and helping others was very special to her. She believed that man does not live by bread alone. She tried to instill a faith in God in her family that would guide them throughout their lives and that the “bread” would not only satisfy their physical needs, but their spiritual needs as well. After moving to town, she became more involved in church activities, quilting sessions, putting together school kits, Circle, recording Prayer for the Day, taking sermon tapes and communion to shut-ins, as well as volunteering for various activities in the community. She sewed over 600 of quilts for Lutheran World Relief, Ingham Okoboji Lutheran Bible Camp and Blessman Ministries. She is survived by her four sons, Keith (Eileen) Denner of West Des Moines, IA, Dean Denner of Manhatten, KS, Allen (Jan) Denner of Ames, IA, Gary (Lori) Denner of Nevada, IA; one daughter, Karen (Mark) Borchers of Holstein, IA. Her grandchildren include, Matt Denner of Des Moines, Tim Denner of West Des Moines, Patty McKenna of Fairbanks, AK, Emma (Jay) Mercier of New Zealand, Abe Denner of Manhattan, KS, John Denner of Wichita, KS, Lisa (Thomas) Wilson of Ames, Lucas Denner of St. Louis, MO, Brian (Mandy) Borchers of Mt. Pleasant, IA, Amy (Dustin) Vanden Hull of Orange City, IA, Daniel (Amanda) Borchers of Ames and Chad Borchers also of Ames. Marie’s great-grandsons include, Paul, Ethan and Kaden. She is also survived by her brother, Ralph (Norma Jean) Beck of New Hampton and her sister, Elna (Don) Clikeman of Greene, IA; as well as two nieces and a nephew. She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil in 2006; her parents, Roy in 1963 and Louise in 1995; her brother-in-law, Albert Denner in 2009 and sister-in-law, Linda Denner in 2013.

To the Denner family, Your mom was a kind and generous woman. I recall her visiting my mom in mom’s later years. Marie would always arrive with a home baked treat or a few flowers from her garden. She was a living example of her faith. Hold her memories close.
We want to extend our condolences for the loss of your mother. Although we haven’t seen her for years, I have many great memories of her from 4-H activities.

Dear Denner family, I’m so sorry for your loss. I was lucky to get to know Marie in the last two years when we did her life story. She was a remarkable woman in her faith, love, devotion to God and family…. and sense of humor. In just her last two years, she had this incredible source of energy and drive to keep making quilts for others… all over the world. in her final two weeks, she CALLED ME to see how I was doing after a neck surgery. It was a warm few minutes. I was so humbled and touched. Love and sympathy to all of you.

Dear Denner family: I am sorry for your loss. I did not know Marie long, having only met her through Mayo Family Care, but she was a lovely lady and I enjoyed the time I spent with her. My prayers are with you at this time.
May God bless you and comfort you at this difficult time. “Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me.” John 14:1
I lift up the entire Marie Denner family in prayer.
