Romaine Otto Heiselman, 91, of New Hampton, Iowa passed away Wednesday, September 3, 2014 at Linn Haven Rehab and Healthcare in New Hampton where he has resided since December 2004. Romaine was born May 10, 1923 to Otto and Ida (Cutsforth) Heiselman on the family farm northeast of New Hampton, Iowa. He attended schools in rural Chickasaw County through the eighth grade. Romaine farmed with his parents until 1950. That year he purchased a farm a couple of miles away closer to Lawler, Iowa, where he farmed until retirement. Romaine was an advocate of preserving our natural resources for future generations and as a result put soil conservation practices into effect on his farm. He also worked part time for the ASCS (Farm Service Agency) during a time while he farmed. Romaine was united in marriage with Mae Koehler on December 4, 1958 at St. Paul’s (now Trinity) Lutheran Church in New Hampton. They continued to live and farm in the rural Lawler area before retiring and moving to New Hampton in 1990. Romaine was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in New Hampton. Romaine and Mae enjoyed their retirement in New Hampton. For a time they delivered Meals on Wheels and especially looked forward to and enjoyed visits by their grandchildren. Romaine is survived by his sons Lyndon (Linda) and their children Alex, Garrett, and Erica of Le Claire, Iowa; Wayne and his daughter Jessica of Cedar Falls; and Robert and his children Eric and Carolmae of New Hampton. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Romaine was preceded in death by his wife Mae on July 19, 2009, his parents, his brothers Gerald and Donald, and sisters-in-law Vivian Heiselman and Bette Heiselman.

Memories Timeline

  1. Thinking of you all at this time. Sending our prayers and sympathy in the passing of your father and grandfather. Always such a kind and wonderful man.

  2. to Romaine’s family, I worked with Romaine at the ASCS/FSA office many years ago when he was employed there but also waited on him many times as a customer also. He was such a pleasant man and his love of the land and his vocation of farming was apparent. Recently I saw him almost every day at Linn Haven…he is at peace now and looking over all of us and our rich Iowa cornfields from above!

  3. No heart breaks alone for God is always near. When a prayer is whispered God is always there to hear. When sorrow’s overwhelming, He comforts tenderly. A single tear never falls that he does not hear.(Psalms 65:2)

  4. Lyndon, Linda, Alex, Garrett and Erica~
Our thought and prayers are with your family today.
    Love~Laura, Kevin, Connor & Dalton

  5. My husband & Romaine were st the same table in the dining room at Linn Haven. Romaine was always pleasant – not saying much but had that cute smile when I teased him about eating or not. I miss him. My thoughts & prayers are with you all.
