Later they moved to a farm near Jerico, Iowa until they made their home in New Hampton from 1956 to the present time. Valeria enjoyed gardening, needlepoint, puzzles, walks, making pies, and listening to polka music especially Molly B. Valeria enjoyed the outdoors and her favorite companion Little Bear. She was a member of Holy Family Parish in New Hampton.
Valeria is survived by her children Kenneth Franzen of New Hampton, Kathryn Franzen of New Hampton, Rebecca Franzen of New Hampton and Stephen (Jo) Franzen of New Hampton; granddaughter, Amanda Franzen of North Liberty, Iowa; and sister, Delores Franzen of New Hampton.
Valeria is preceded in death by her parents, Victor and Mary Berst; her husband, Clarence; son, Alan “Big Al”; brothers, Adrian and Charles; and sister, Leona.
A great loss also for all of her adopted kids. “Ma” Franzen took us all in and thoroughly enjoyed whipping us all at euchre with her cheating partner Clarence. I will remember those games in the kitchen, in the basement, and out in the yard. Bumming Luckys and Blue Ribbons from Clarence and drinking Ma’s homemade wine. My prayers are with her family and I hope they know we will all miss our “Ma”.
Becky, Kathy and the rest of the family, so sorry about your mom. You all have my sympathy and prayers.

Sorry for the loss to the Franzen family. We could not ask for better neighbors for the last 49 years. We have enjoyed their garden produce and baked items and more important their friendship. We miss our visits as she walked around the block since she entered the NHNR. She was a special person to her family and friends. Valeria, Clarence, and Big Al say some prayers for us.
