Valeria Jo Frey, of New Hampton, IA, passed away on Friday, August 17, 2018 at her home. Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, August 22, 2018 at Trinity Lutheran Church in New Hampton, IA. Burial will be at a later date at her home town of Audubon, IA. Visitation will be held from 4:00-8:00 PM on Tuesday, August 21, 2018 at Trinity Lutheran Church in New Hampton, IA and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. Memorials may be directed to Trinity Lutheran Youth Fund or to the family for a scholarship to be given to a STEM graduating senior from Denver High School in Val’s name. Val was born September 10, 1960 in Storm Lake, IA the daughter of Richard and Betty (Robbins) McVinua. She graduated from Audubon High School in 1979. She met Kevin Frey as both were Bible Camp counselors at Okoboji Lutheran Bible Camp. In 1981 they were married in Audubon. They settled in St. Paul, MN where Kevin attended seminary. Val graduated from Westmar University and began her teaching career after the family moved to Denver, IA. Val taught her entire career at the Denver Elementary School, employed there since 1989 until the present. In addition to teaching duties, Val was a leader in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Education both in Denver and in Northeast Iowa having led FIRST Lego League teams who qualified for state, national and international competitions. Val was also a graduate of the University of Northern Iowa receiving her Masters Degree in Curriculum Development. Youth of all ages were a passion of Val’s heart. She touched countless lives through leading church musical groups and mission trips. Val is survived by her husband Kevin of New Hampton; her children and their spouses Joshua and Franny Frey of Waukee, IA, Andrew and Anora Frey of Champaign, IL and Emma Frey of St. Louis Park, MN; her mother Betty McVinua of Audubon, IA and her brother and his wife and family Corey and Shana McVinua of Maryville, MO; and her dogs Cocoa and Oreo. She is preceded in death by her father Richard McVinua in 2001. Val’s wishes at her funeral are that all her family and friends wear their favorite colors.

  1. Dear Frey Family, I am so sorry for your lost. Val was a true angel who walked among us here on Earth. We were all very lucky to be blessed with such a wonderful friend in our lives. I pray for your comfort as you continue your grieving process. I know that Val will continue to shine her light on us from above.

I have missed her presence in my teaching since I left Denver, but I know she continued to be a creative, supportive, and effective teacher. She also continued to be my friend. My thoughts and prayers are with Kevin, Josh, Andy, and Emma as they learn how to live without their beloved wife and mom.
