Harold Thiele, age 86 of Elma, IA passed away Tuesday, February 18, 2014 surrounded by his family at his home in Elma. Harold Herbert Thiele was born on November 1, 1927 to Leo and Anna (Lengling) Thiele on a farm near Elma. He attended country school in Afton Township to the eighth grade and also received an honorary high school diploma. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1944. Harold received his honorable discharge in 1946. Upon his return home, Harold worked at Quaker Oats in Cedar Rapids. He was employed at Oliver in Charles City while farming with his dad. On January 5, 1952, Harold was united in marriage to Kathleen Regan at Immaculate Conception Church in Elma. He started farming on his own in 1954 near Elma on the Regan farm. Harold and Kathleen moved to Powersville, Iowa in 1984 and moved back to Elma in 2000. Harold enjoyed camping, traveling, farming, wood working, gardening, bicycling and making beer and wine. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, Elma American Legion and was post commander, as well as belonging to the Catholic Order of Foresters. Harold is survived by his wife, Kathleen of Elma; his children, Patricia (Sam) Bass of Everett, WA, Gregory (Sharon) Thiele of Elma, Julie (Jeff) Duncan of Leland, IA, May Ellen (Bryce) Larsen of Elma, Gerald (Rhonda) Thiele of St. Joseph, MI, Neil Thiele of Elma and Beverly (Bill Knoess) Thiele of Oradell, NJ; 12 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, several step grandchildren; his sister-in-law, Norma Thiele of Arizona and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Clara Bayer and infant sister, Leona; his brothers, Joseph, Lawrence, Leo, Henry and Carl and his infant granddaughters Ashley and Stacie Larsen. In Lieu of flowers, Memorials may be directed to the family.
