John Patrick was born October 10, 1953, the son of Louis and Katherine (Smith) Geerts. John’s career in the plumbing and HVAC industry began at a young age. While in school, John also maintained the hospital grounds. He attended and graduated from New Hampton High School in 1971. After John completed his education, he continued to work for Mercy Hospital until he went to Beatrice Cheese and then to Geerts Plumbing and Heating. On July 24, 1982, John was united in marriage to Rita Kreeger at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in New Hampton. The couple made their home in North Washington and blended their family as one. They welcomed their children, Patrick, Sarah, Chris, Justin, Nathan and Tim. John was active in the New Hampton community teaching hunter’s Education for over 45 years, and an active member of the Jaycees. He was an avid outdoorsman, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and riding his motorcycle. John also enjoyed bowling. John’s pride and joy was his family, he looked forward to attending their sporting events every chance he got. He was always ready to lend a helping hand and will be forever remembered for his warm smile, kind heart and, “needless to say”, his long detailed stories.
Those left to cherish his memories are his wife, Rita Geerts of North Washington; his children, Patrick (Jodi) Geerts of New Hampton, Sarah Bluhm of North Washington, Chris Bluhm of New Hampton, Justin (Jen) Geerts of North Washington, Nathan (Nicolette) Geerts of Georgia, and Tim (Bonita) Geerts of Floyd, IA; his grandchildren, Noah, Blake, Austin, Brittney, Jesse, Sheyanne, Lowen, Dalton, Keaton, Maximus, Aurora, Liorra, Ethan, Athea, and Archer; two great-grandchildren, Hayes and Beckett; his siblings, Ted Geerts of New Hampton, Margaret Harn of Waterloo, IA, Mike (Katie) Geerts of New Hampton and Steve Geerts, also of New Hampton; his sisters-in-law, Helen Geerts of North Washington and Susan Geerts of New Hampton; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his granddaughter, Stacey Cano; his siblings, Bernard and Tom; and sisters-in-law, Nita and Ronnie Geerts.

I’ve known John on and off for years. He did a lot of fishing with my brother Mike. The two were almost inseparable and they always amaze me on how they could just chatter on about anything. Last year was probably my favorite. I found them in the garage and they were sitting on my knee scooters, I had to have them for post-surgery on my foot. Anyway, they’re sitting on these knee scooters and ended up having a race a couple of times down my driveway. I have the video and it’s a stitch. he always liked hanging around with my brother’s, They always had a great time. He was an amazing human being. He will be greatly missed . My heart goes out to his family and I know my brother Mike will probably never be the same without him. Rest well my friend.
