Norman H. Smith

Norman Smith, age 90, of Frederika, IA died on Friday, October 31, 2008 at Waverly Health Center in Waverly, IA.
Norman Hall Smith was born on June 30, 1918 to Carl and Maud (Burbridge) Smith on the family farm near Bristow, IA. He attended country school in rural Butler County. Norman worked on farms as a hired hand. In 1942 he enlisted in the US Army Air Corp serving his country during World War II in Casablanca, Morocco and Abadan, Iran achieving the rank of Tech. Sargeant. Norman received his honorable discharge on December 24, 1945. He was united in marriage to Janina Hnatow on June 15, 1946 in Basra, Iraq. The couple made their home on the farm near Ionia, IA. They farmed for 37 years until retirement in 1983 when they moved to Frederika.
Norman enjoyed horses, chuck wagon races and hunting. He was a member of Frederika United Methodist Church and New Hampton American Legion Fae Stine Post #38
Norman is survived by his four children Noren (Lois) Smith of Ionia, IA, Norris (Sybil) Smith of Gowrie, IA, Barbra (Jim) Bloom of Albuquerque, NM and Linda (John) McCarville of New Hampton, IA; nine grandchildren; three great grandchildren; brothers Carl (Leona) Smith of Ionia, IA, Darwin Smith of Nashua, IA, Lavane Smith of Ionia; one sister Leatrice Einck of Nashua, IA; several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; wife Janina on March 24, 2007; two sisters infant sister and Marva; two brothers William and Vane.
Cemetery:
Burial will be in Alcock Cemetery, Frederika, IA. Military rites will be provided by the American Legion Fae Stine Post #38 and the New Hampton VFW Post #5238.
Visitation:
Visitation will be from 4:00pm to 7:00pm on Tuesday, November 4, 2008 at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in New Hampton. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.
Service:
Funeral services will be 10:30am on Wednesday, November 5, 2008 at Frederika United Methodist Chuch, in Frederika, IA with Hermina Amoroso as officiant.
Unfortunately I was ill the day of the service and had not heard about Norman’s death in time to attend the visitation. Deepest sympathies from my family and me to yours. Judy Bennor.
