Ruth Josephine was born October 16, 1917, the daughter of Frank and Abbie (Croot) Hayes in Hardin County. She was one of nine children and was raised on the family farm. Ruth was always busy helping her mother with her younger siblings. She was a graduate of New Hartford High School and then worked at various nursing homes and helped care for children in her home. Ruth met her husband, Frank Way on a blind date. The couple were united in marriage in 1939 and welcomed one son, Ronald. When their son was just three years old, Frank was killed in the Battle of the Bulge. Ruth continued to care for children in her home as she raised Ron on her own. She later met her husband, Leslie Miller at a card party. Ruth and Leslie were married in 1955 and made their home in New Hampton. Though, Leslie passed away in 2014, Ruth remained on their farm until the age of 99 and only moved to the nursing home recently. She was always proud of her large garden and enjoyed crafting throughout the years. Ruth was known to especially enjoy a good game of cards. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters, St. Mary’s Catholic Church and then Holy Family Parish. Ruth is survived by her son, Ron (Debbee) Way of Dunkerton, IA; her granddaughter, Dr. Stephanie (Dan) White of Madrid, IA; grandson, Clark (Renee) Way of Des Moines, IA; two great-grandchildren, Keenan and Marshall; her siblings, Lou (Sandy) Mazzu, Larry (Candy) Hayes, and Audrey Brinker; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Frank and Leslie; and her siblings, Katherine, Bob, Mary, Marjorie, and Claude.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. My sympathy to the family of Ruth Miller. We played cards for many years together . She was a lovely lady and friend, Rest in God’s arms Ruth.

  2. Ruth and Less were always very nice neighbors to have out on a country road. They were some of the first to stop and welcome my family to the neighborhood when we moved to our current home. Ruth would always appreciate when you would take the time to stop and visit for awhile and normally there would be some fresh cookies before you would leave. May your soul rest in heaven and our deepest sympathy to Ron and all of his family.

  3. Deepest sympathy to Ruth’s family. She lived a long and good life. I’m sorry I can’t make the the services.

  4. I have many fond memories of my Aunt Ruth…Spending my summer vacations at the farm as a young boy: holding squealing baby pigs; climbing trees so high that Uncle Les had to rescue me; helping with chores; picking beans and peas from the garden for dinner; and inhaling those famous, fresh & warm rhubard pies. Fresh air, daily exercise, cool mornings of soft sunlight and birdsong, good hot food and evening conversation, all help build a good and long life. May my Aunt Ruth rest in peace. Love, Kevin Mazzu “Those we love don’t go away They walk beside us every day Unseen, unheard, but always near, Still loved, still missed and very dear” -Irish Poem-

  5. Rick & June Laures Our deepest sympathy to Ron and family. Ruth and Les were warm and caring neighbors – always there to share a lending hand. June enjoyed playing cards with her. Her memory and love will be eternal.
