Aleatha M. (Burke) Fortune, age 82, of Elma, Iowa and formerly of Waterloo, died on Friday, April 10, 2009 at Mercy Medical Center in Mason City, Iowa. Aleatha Margaret Fortune was born on November 30, 1926 to William and Alice (Belek) Burke in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She was united in marriage to Merrild Fortune on March 5, 1946 at the Immaculate Conception rectory in Elma, Iowa. Aleatha worked as a cosmetologist for 30 years. After retiring she was an outreach worker for Allamakee County and started the senior meal site in Harpers Ferry which she managed for four years. She then helped care for several elderly ladies until moving to Waterloo in 2000. Aleatha cared for her husband until his death on December 14, 2003. She was a member of St. Edwards Church in Waterloo and helped with funeral dinners and a member of Immaculate Conception church in Elma. She was also a member of the C.C.W. and a volunteer at Covenant Hospital for three years. Aleatha is survived by two daughters Dianna Martinson of Mason City, Iowa and Cindy (David) Butler of Westcliffe, Colorado; two grandsons Dr. Brad (Susan) Hagarty of Colfax, Iowa and Matt (Mary) Martinson of Spring Valley, Wisconsin; four great grandchildren Caitlyn, Hannah, Madeline and Jayme Nell ; three sisters Phyllis Dietrich (Francis) of Elma, Iowa, Shirley Mihm of Dubuque, Iowa and Muriely (Don) McAllister of North Richland Hills, Texas; four brothers Jack (Eleanor) Burke of Elma, Iowa, Don (Fran) Burke of Cresco, Iowa, Norbert (Theresa) Burke of Elma, Iowa and Jim (Judy) Burke of Waterloo, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Merrild; four brothers Bill, Allen, Glenn and Joseph; four nephews; one niece. Cemetery: Burial will be in Mt Olivet Cemetery at Waterloo, Iowa on Tuesday at 2:00 pm. Visitation: Visitation will be from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Monday, April 13, 2009 at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in Elma with a rosary at 5:00 pm and a scriptural wake service at 7:00 pm. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the Funeral Home. Service: Mass of Christian burial will be at10:30 am on Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, in Elma, Iowa with Father Ray Atwood as celebrant.

  6. I’m so sorry to hear of your loss. I wish I’d been at the funeral for you but I didn’t see the obit in the paper till after the funeral. I always remember your mom as such a beauty and she was always so nice to us kids when we dropped by uninvited.
