Alfred was born January 29, 1931 to Frank and Julia (Reicks) Mueterthies in St. Lucas, IA. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Luke’s Catholic Church. Alfred attended St. Lucas Catholic School through the sixth grade when he moved to Lawler to finish his education. However, six weeks into his freshman year, Alfred was needed on the farm and had to quit school. This was only the beginning of his lifelong love for farming. On September 4, 1957, Alfred was united in marriage to Joan Schmitz at St. Boniface Church in Ionia. The couple made their home on a farm east of New Hampton where their first five children were born. They then moved to the family farm in 1965, where their youngest child was born. They continued farming until their retirement in 1993 when they moved to Lawler.
Alfred was a lifelong member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. His love for farming was also a lifelong passion. He enjoyed polka music and in his later years, “windshield farming.” He treasured spending time with family and teasing his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Fritz will be deeply missed by those who knew him.
