Algie A. Slindee, age 76, of Elma, IA passed away unexpectedly of natural causes on Sunday, October 17at his home in Elma. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, October 25, 2021 at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City with Pastor Anita Nuetzman officiating. Burial will be held at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City. Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 PM on Sunday, October 24, 2021 at Conway-Markham Funeral Home in Elma, IA and will continue at the church one hour prior to the funeral service on Monday. Online condolences may be left at www.conway-markhamfh.com. Memorials may be directed to the family. Algie Arthur Slindee was born February 26, 1945, to Algie Burnett Slindee and Jurene L. Stubberud Slindee in Lyle, Minnesota. He died peacefully at home on Sunday, October 17, 2021. He was baptized at First Lutheran Church, St Ansgar, Iowa. He started country school in Otranto, Iowa. The family moved to Charles City in 1955. Algie was confirmed in March 1959 at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Charles City, Iowa by Rev. Werne Bishop. He continued his schooling in the Charles City School system. In 1963 he graduated from the Charles City High School. Algie enlisted in the US Marine Corps at the age of 20 receiving his boot camp training at MCRD San Diego and Camp Pendleton. His next duty was NAS Memphis for basic electronics and jet engine school. His first duty station was MCAS Beaufort, South Carolina. He was assigned to VMFA 312 an F-4 Phantom Squadron. About half of his time was spent on T.A.D. to MCAS. Yuma, Arizona Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico, and national defense duty in Key West Florida. He was also sent to MCAS Cherry Point, North Carolina, an additional jet engine school. His next duty station was MCAS Kaneohe, Hawaii. He was assigned to 212 F-4 Phantom Squadron. Both of the air squadrons he was in were training pilots and R10’s for Vietnam. He pre-flighted the aircraft and was an airplane Captain Flightline. In February of 1970, he was sent to Treasure Island California for the discharge of active duty. He obtained the rank of E5 Sergeant and was the senior enlisted man of his shop. After he was discharged from the Marines he came back to Iowa. Algie worked for Winnebago Construction Co., working on the bridge at Mona, Iowa, and International Harvester Company in Austin, Minnesota. Algie married Kay Mannetter on June 19, 1971, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City, Iowa. The Rev. Perry Brown married them. Three children were born to Algie and Kay; Sonja Kaylene, Brent Andrew, and Nadia Louise. Algie and Kay moved to West Salem Wisconsin where he worked at Beebe Implement as parts manager. Before leaving West Salem Algie helped in the restoration of Hamlin Garland Homestead. In August 1980 they moved back to Iowa to farm and he worked as a parts manager at Roden Johnson John Deere store at Davis Corners Iowa. Later he worked at Charles City Glass and then at McNeilus Co. at Riceville, Iowa for his last 18 1⁄2 years of employment before retirement. Tractors started as a passion after he was out of the Marines. First, a couple of John Deeres were fixed up to sell. Then the Silver King and then he bought his grandpa's Twin City at the estate sale. Kay and Algie restored that tractor and it was his pride and joy. He was still restoring the MMR Cab when he died. He was also very fond of his 19641⁄2 Mustang.Algie liked woodworking and was a lifetime member of the Cedar Valley Engine Club where he was a sawyer for the Labor Day Weekend show for some years. He was an avid reader of anything, but specialized in tractor books and or literature, family genealogy, and the Civil War. He was a charismatic fellow and was able to strike a conversation with anybody at any time or anywhere. He loved his family and people. He enjoyed watching his grandkids participate in sports and music. Algie enjoyed driving, so for the last couple of years he was a driver to deliver vehicles for a local dealership. He also bowled with the senior bowlers in Charles City. He was a member of the Marine Corps League, American Legion, Farm Bureau, Floyd County Historical Society, Cedar Valley Engine Club, PGR, MMCI, Great Northern Oliver, Oliver Corn Belt, and a charter member of HPOCA, West Salem Historical Society, and had served as a Mitchell County Reserve Deputy Sheriff, and a member of the St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church. Survived by: wife Kay Slindee, children Kay Marie McNamara (Steve), Sonja Cotton (Mike), Brent Slindee (Terry), Nadia Slindee Henle (Steve). Grandchildren: Ashlee Arrieta (Andy); April Wilson (Michael); Amber Brimmer; Austin Brimmer; Mija Cotton; Joslyn Cotton; Kaleb Cotton; Shannon Bochmann (Justin); Leah Kane (Jeff) Great Grandchildren: Kaylee Blackburne; Alyssa Wilson; Landon Arrieta, Jaidyn Wilson, Issac Bockmann, Hayla Kane; Eliana Bockmann, Jayci Kane, Maverick Kane. Sister Terrie Nitardy (Steve); Sister-in-law Linda Slindee; Niece Ashley Shankle (Dan) Great Grand Nephew Elijah Shankle and Great Grand Niece Ava Shankle; and numerous cousins; Several aunts and an uncle. He stopped by the farm and we talked about all kinds of things and caught up on life’s happenings for a couple hours. We shared some great laughs! He was always very kind and welcoming.
