Bernice Hammond, age 85, of Elma, IA died on Friday, December 17, 2010 at Colonial Manor in Elma. Bernice Margaret Stiefel was born in the New Hampton hospital on March 26, 1925, daughter of John and Sophia (Weise) Stiefel. She attended the New Hampton Public School graduating with the class of 1943. After graduation from high school she was employed as a secretary by R.J. Sullivan, Attorney at Law for several years. Later she was employed as a bookkeeper for the Barnett Appliance store. She married Fern Hammond on January 15, 1951 and they have lived in Elma until now. Besides being a wife and mother, she was employed by Howard Winneshiek Schools for 20 years as a secretary. Bernice enjoyed bowling, playing cards, especially Bridge, and visiting with family and friends. Bernice was an active member of the Elma United Methodist Church and the Elma American Legion Auxiliary. Survivors include her husband; two children Randy Lee Hammond of Brooklyn Center, MN and Denise Ann (David) Bergo of Plymouth, MN; two grandchildren Gretchen (Brent) Wegner and Stephanie Bergo; and one great granddaughter Gemma Lillian Wegner. She was preceded in death by her parents; six brothers Henry, George, Albert, Walter, Rudy and John Stiefel; and one sister Irma (Alvie) Althof. Memorials: Memorials may be directed to the family. Cemetery: Burial will be at Howard Cemetery in Elma. Visitation: Visitation will be 9-11am on Tuesday, December 21, 2010 at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in Elma. Service: Funeral services will be at 11:00 am on Tuesday December 21, 2010 at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in Elma, with Pastor Paula Hemann officiating.

  3. Bernice taught me a lot about fun, love and hard work. I will never forget all the good times, especially as I was growing up. All children should be so lucky. Bernice and Fern have always been in my Hall of Fame.

  4. Fern and family, you have my deepest sympathy. Bernice was a wonderful lady. I have many fond childhood memories of her. One of my favorites is that she always had oatmeal cookies in the freezer whenever we stopped over. Our family enjoyed having her as a neighbor and she always made a point to stop over and chat with us whenever we were back in the neighborhood for a visit. My thoughts and prayers are with your family at this difficult time.

Bernice was a wonderful lady, I Enjoyed her in School, and we always made it a point to hit the Hammond House on Halloween… Thee Best Popcorn ever….it had been years since I had Seen Bernice and she came into the Store i worked at and she new who I was ” that i was a Kobliska” May U find comfort and peace knowing she is enjoying Christmas with the Heavenly Father…

    I am so sorry for your loss. I had many great times with your mom. I remember the summer I spent with you and they were blacktopping the road. I wish that I could be there. Randy and I moved to Oklahoma in 2001. We had a great time that afternoon we came over and spent with you. All of you are in my thougths and prayers.

    always a difficult event, certainly my father’s passing 2 years ago was difficult, even if we all knew it was soon to happen.

    I recently heard about Bernice’s death. Paul Denner is my Dad. My Mom, Myra, died two years ago. I just wanted you to know that my parents enjoyed your company. I think the last time I saw the two of you was at fish fry in Alta Vista several years ago.
