Don attended country school in Howard County. Upon completing his education, Don enlisted in the US Army and served in Germany during the Korean Conflict as a guard. When he returned home, Don was united in marriage to Eula Zensen on October 14, 1972 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Faribault, MN. The couple made their home in Elma, IA where they raised their two children, Rebecca and James. Don worked a variety of jobs over the years including farm labor for several farmers, maintenance at Colonial Manor and Featherlite in Cresco until his retirement. Don enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a tinkerer. If he couldn’t buy it, he made it in his shop. Don worked on small engines and took pride in fixing lawn mowers. He also enjoyed woodcarving on walking sticks. You could always spot him driving his little red tractor around town and picking up cans. He and Eula often went to parades and garage sales. Don especially loved visiting and helping others. Don is survived by his wife, Eula; his children, Rebecca (Sean) Mullan of Janesville, WI and James Ludwig of Elma, IA; his grandchildren, Logan and Alyssa Mullan of Janesville, WI; his sisters, Eleanor Gansen and Janette Meyer, both of Elma; his aunt, Mildred Murphy of Eldridge, IA; several nieces, nephews and extended family; wonderful neighbors and great friends. He is preceded in death by his parents; Louis and Helen; his brothers-in-law, Joe Gansen, William Meyer and James Zensen; sister-in-law, Marie Zensen; and parents-in-law, Clarence and Celia Zensen.

Guestbook

  1. Did a rabbit hunt with Don one snowy day and didn’t bring home any rabbits as I missed them all!
But many jokes were told that day as to who missed what.

  2. My heartfelt condolences to the family. Mary and Martha were still living on earth when Jesus reunited them with their brother Lazarus, who had fallen asleep in death. Jesus will do the same for our dear loved ones. (John 11:11-44; John 5:28,29). Mr Donald will answer when Jesus awakens him.
