Esther Flugge, age 89, of Elma, IA, died on Friday, October 29, 2010 at Colonial Manor in Elma, IA. Esther Lucille Bhend was born on July 29, 1921 to Albert and Katherine (Nagele) Bhend in Le Roy, MN. She graduated from Le Roy High School in 1939. Esther then attended and graduated from Minneapolis Business School in 1940. She was employed as a secretary at Minnesota Fiber Mill. Esther was united in marriage to Harold Flugge on February 14, 1943 at the Le Roy Presbyterian Church. Esther and Harold then made their home and farmed in the Elma area. Upon retiring from farming the couple continued to live on their family farm until 2007 when Esther entered Colonial Manor in Elma. Esthers great passions were quilting and embroidery. She also enjoyed gardening, her wild flower bed, playing cards, and Sunday dinners with her family. Esther was a member of St. Pauls Maple Leaf Lutheran Church. She is survived by her children, Janice (Daryl) Dybevik of Cresco, Iowa, Barbara (Tom) Schroeder of Elma, Keith (Ellen) Flugge of Cary, Illinois; her granddaughters, Wanda (Jan) Becker, Laura (Chris) Zenner, Stacie (Matthew Burrington) Schroeder, Nicole (Nick Dockendorf) Schroeder, Lisa (Owen) Berendes, Michelle (Todd) Anderson, and Katie (Michael) Sitch; six great-grandchildren, Samantha, and Jackson Becker, Sarah and Celia Berendes, Livia Anderson, and Beau Sitch; step great grandson Kyle Zenner;her sisters-in-law, Helen Shoars of Osage, Iowa, Caroline Flugge of Kansas City, Missouri, Lois Flugge of Elma, and Viola Flugge of North Hollywood, California; and several nieces and nephews. Esther was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband, Harold; two brothers, Walter and William Bhend; and her sister, Louise Heimer. Cemetery: Burial will be in Saratoga Township Cemetery at Lime Springs, Iowa. Visitation: Visitation will be on Monday, November 1, 2010 from 4:00-7:00pm at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Chapel in Elma. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the service on Tuesday. Service: Funeral Services will be held at 10:30am on Tuesday, November 2, 2010 at St. Pauls Maple Leaf Lutheran Church in Elma with Pastor Dan Christensen officiating.
