Harold N. Peters, age 91 of New Hampton passed away on Monday, February 27, 2017 at ManorCare Health Systems in Waterloo.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Thursday, March 2, 2017 at Holy Family Parish in New Hampton with Father Brian Dellaert celebrating. Burial will be held at Calvary Cemetery in New Hampton with Keith Janssen, Travis Fox, Codey Fox, Michael Kulish III, Corey Campbell, Harlan Peters and Rodney Janssen serving as casket bearers. Military rites will be provided by the American Legion Fae Stine Post #38 and the United States Navy Honor Detail.
Visitation will be held from 9:30-10:30 AM on Thursday, March 2, 2017 at Holy Family Parish in New Hampton. Online condolences for Harold’s family may be left at www.conway-markhamfh.com. Memorials may be directed to the family.
Harold Nicholas Peters was born on June 5, 1925 to Henry and Cora (Frankhauser-Deal) Peters in Chickasaw County, Iowa. He attended rural schools and St. Joseph Grade School. At the age of 16, Harold enlisted in the United States Navy after being granted permission by his parents. Harold served 24 months aboard the air craft carriers, USS Enterprise and USS Windham Bay as Seaman first Class. He was honorably discharged in June of 1946. It would be 55 years later when he received his military honors from his service during World War. On December 27, 1950, Harold was united in marriage to Norma Jean Hovey at St. Joseph’s Church rectory. The couple made their home in New Hampton where they raised their four children, Gloria, Cathy, Harlan and Daniel. Harold worked for Oliver White in Charles City, Highway Surfaces for 30 years and the City of New Hampton for 10 years when he retired in 1989.
Harold enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling for over 50 years, having received the Bowling Hall of Fame Trophy and playing cards. He especially enjoyed time with his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In 2014, Harold was able to go on the Veteran’s Honor Flight to Washington DC.
Harold is survived by his wife of 62 years, Norma Peters of New Hampton; his children, Gloria Fox, Cathy (Rod) Janssen both of Dumont, Iowa and Harlan (Wendy) Peters of New Hampton; grandchildren, Travis (Kandy) Fox, Nicole Whitney, Keith Janssen, Teresa (Corey) Campbell, Trisha Fox and Mandie Nelson and 23 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Daniel, one grandson, Michael; two granddaughters, Tina and Michelle; and two brothers, Donald and Virgil.

I am sorry to learn of Harold’s passing. Having worked with him for three years at Smith Construction Co was quite an experience and a lot of fun. My sympathies to you Norma and your family. I’ll always remember my Fareway days when Harold would come into the store and give me a hard time. Sure liked to tease! He was quite a joker. Always made me laugh. You’re in my thoughts.

Norma and family, So sorry for your loss. I was just telling someone the other day how Harold came to our Red Hats Christmas party and Norma was so worried he would not have fun but he was the ball of the party at our silly supper. Will always remember that night and was a great guy he was. Howard always enjoyed visiting and laughing with Razor Blades as he called him.

Norma, Gloria, Kathy and Harlan…..you have our deepest sympathy in your loss…..we will surely miss our good neighbor…..we’ve been neighbors a long, long time and even though I haven’t seen him much recently, it still makes me smile to remember some of our visits throughout the years….loved his smile and his chuckle!
