Irene T. Shatek, age 94 of New Hampton, IA passed away on Sunday, November 8, 2015 at Mercy Medical Center-New Hampton. Irene Theresa Shatek was born March 26, 1921 to Edward and Anna (Schmitt) Hackman on the family farm near Festina, IA. She attended Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic School in Festina. She helped with farming and chores. On May 29, 1945 Irene was united in marriage to Wesley Shatek at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Festina. The couple made their home on the farm near Elma, IA which was Wesley’s parent’s farm. In 1981 they moved an acreage west of Protivin. Wesley and Irene had steers, hogs and chickens and also helped their son’s farm. In 1994 they retired and moved to New Hampton. Irene enjoyed time with her family, and volunteering at church. She led the Rosary at the care centers, sang at funerals and volunteered at the food shelf. She also enjoyed playing cards at the 500 Mixer Card Club, traveling and dancing and in later years dancing with a walker and her kitty Ann. Irene was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and St. Joseph’s Church in New Hampton and the Rosary Society. Irene is survived by her children Robert (Diane) Shatek of New Hampton, Ruth (Roger) Cooney of Maple Grove, MN, Lester “Shorty” (Joyce) Shatek of New Hampton, Jane (Leo) Kottschade of Plainview, MN, Norma (Peter) Ronneberg, Eagan, MN, Roger (Lori) Shatek of Ft. Atkinson, IA, Daniel (Cathy) Shatek of Elma, IA, James (Kris) Shatek of New Hampton, Donald (Tina) Shatek of Elma, and Randy (Lori) Shatek of Lawler, IA; sisters Sister Phyllis Ann Hackman FSPA of LaCrosse, WS, Lucille Kruse of Ossian, IA, and Phyllis (Duane) Einwalter of Ft. Atkinson; brothers Paul (Betty) Hackman of Calmar, IA, and Norbert (Mary) Hackman of Ft. Atkinson; sister-in-law Florence Hackman of Cresco, IA; brother-in-law Joseph Shatek of Ft. Atkinson; 37 grandchildren; 36 great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents Edward and Anna Hackman; her husband Wesley; brother Othmar Hackman; sisters Sister Marcella Hackman FSPA, and Rita Shatek; sister-in-law Elnore Hackman; brother-in-law Art Kruse; and nephew James Hackman.

  1. My sympathy to Irene’s family for your loss. I knew Irene only for a short time but was privileged to have cared for her during her stay at NHNRC. Such a sweet lady who will be sadly missed.

  14. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. So sorry to hear about Irene. I have some great memories of hanging at the Shatek Farm and enjoying Irene’s baking. She lived a great and wonderfully full life and she is in great hands now. There are a lot of the old neighbors up there having a few card games. Again, you have my Sympathy.
