Leonard D Benson, age 73, of New Hampton, IA passed away on Saturday, January 7, 2017 at his home. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, January 14, 2017 at Conway-Markham Funeral Home in New Hampton with Father Brian Dellaert officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be held from 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM on Sautrday, January 14, 2017 at Conway-Markham Funeral Home in New Hampton. Memorials may be directed to Leonard’s family. Leonard David Benson was born on September 25, 1943 to Leonard Basil and Betty Eileen (Roach) Benson in Mason City, IA. He attended school in Mason City and graduated from Mason City High School in 1961. Leonard worked at various jobs before owning and operating his own sanitation service called L&M sanitation in Rockwell, IA. Leonard later held several positions during his travels around the country. He moved to the New Hampton area where he was the high school janitor for several years. Leonard also was employed at Winnebago Industries in Charles City and TriMark in New Hampton. Leonard enjoyed working on cars and could fix anything. He liked fishing, but more than anything he took pride in helping others. He could be heard saying, “Can’t never did anything, don’t be afraid to try.” Leonard is survived by his children Carlen Lewis of Hickory, North Carolina, Kelly (Michele) Hert of Clear Lake, IA, Mindy Myers of Decorah, IA, Lyn (Kathryn) Benson of Kansas City, MO and Megan McLaughlin of Waterloo, IA; grandchildren Amber, Ashlee, Uriah, Ian, Jordana, Ayden, Nathaniel, Mason and Emily; brother Kenneth (Mary Rose) Benson of Mason City, IA; sister Mary (Bob) Johnson of Orange CA; and several nieces and nephews. Leonard is preceded in death by his parents Leonard and Betty Benson and two brothers Larry and Bernie Jo.
