Mary E. Thies, age 82 of Elma, IA passed away on Friday, March 13, 2014 with her family by her side at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN. Mary Elizabeth Kirchner was born August 20, 1932 to George and Christine (Haag) Kirchner in Dexter, MN. She attended and graduated from Elma High School. On April 19, 1952, Mary was united in marriage to Roland Thies and became a farm wife. The couple was blessed with four children, Gregory, Sheryl, Timothy and William. Mary and her children moved to town after Roland passed away on June 30, 1967. She worked at Colonial Manor Care Center as the head cook for 14 years before her Rheumatoid Arthritis forced her to retire and eventually left her confined to a lift chair. She was very involved with her church and loved to bake, cook, and going for walks when she was in better health. In later years, she spent time watching Hallmark Movie Channel, sports, especially basketball, baseball and football. She always enjoyed visits from family and friends. Mary was fortunate to have spent her last two months in her own home; only due to the devotion of her son, Bill who was by her side 24/7 to attend to her every need and want. Mary leaves her family a legacy of faith in Our Lord and Savior, love of family and friends and strength and courage to face every situation…no matter how difficult. Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Gregory (Dawn) Thies of New Hampton, their family, Valerie (Stacey) Wilberding and Brady, Samantha and Vanessa; Naomi (Jason) Bye and Colter and Hunter; Brandon (Amber) Thies and Saphira; and Christoher Thies; her daughter, Sheryl (Randy) Ferrie of Cresco, IA and their family; Roland and Ramsey; her son, Timothy (Lori) Thies of Mason City, IA and their family; Tiffany (Jeff) Nonnweiler and Elizabeth, Weston and Annalise; and Tabitha and Tyler Thies; and her youngest son, William “Bill” Thies of Elma, IA; her sisters, Beverly Flugge and Doloris Halweg; her brother, DuWayne (Margie) Kirchner; Her sisters-in-law, Lila Brummond and Lois Kirchner; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roland Thies; parents; granddaughter, Stephanie Hurst; brother Marvin Kirchner and brothers-in-law, Marvin Nielsen, Dan Halweg, Don Flugge, Walter Thies and Erwin Brummond.

Guestbook

  1. Mary’s Family, So sorry to hear of her passing. Her faith, strength & kind heart made her such a wonderful person. Family meant the world to her. I remember the big, delicious chocolate chip cookies she’d give my 3 kids when they were little. We were neighbors for 27 years. We didn’t go back & forth, yet were always in each other’s prayers. May God give you the strength & peace you need during this sad time of loss. God Bless You All. Deb & Don Morrison

  2. My sympathy to all of Mary’s family. It was always so nice to see you at the Manor. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

  3. To our dear friend Mary,
We love you and will miss you always. Your kindness and caring for others was touching. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
Diane Kinnamon and son, Rob Elwood, Jr.

  4. Bill, Tim and all the Thies family – my thoughts are with you as I read of the passing of your mother. I always remember her one of the sweetest ladies in town..

  5. Dear Thies Family,
I am very sorry to hear of your loss. It is never easy dealing with the loss of a loved one. We can, however, find comfort from God’s Word the Bible. In John 11:25 we are promised there will be a resurrection of those who have fallen asleep in death. I hope this promise gives you all comfort and strength.
