  9. Since I departed Ionia some 35 years ago, I have within me only youthful memories of Elaine and Maurice. And what wonderful memories they are. Elaine shall forever be like a second mother to me. Nourishing me. (Her chocolate oatmeal cookies were worth stealing from the kitchen counter….and we did). Guiding me. And yes…scolding me. I needed all three..often. Maurice was a taciturn stalwart who could intimidate a skinny neighbor kid with his gruff growl, yet embrace him with a twinkle that forever danced in his eyes.

One of my favorite poets, Kalil Gibran, once said, “Perhaps it is that a funeral among men is a wedding among the angels.” Imagine the party they are having today.

They came often to visit our parents and helped them move some of their things when moving off the farm. Our yellow lab, Goldie, came from your folks. Please know they are in heaven and together.
