Norbert N. Steffen, age 89, of New Hampton, IA died on Monday, March 18, 2013 at New Hampton Nursing and Rehab in New Hampton. Norbert Nicholas Steffen was born on April 27, 1923 to Joseph and Matilda (Meier) Steffen in Dunkerton, IA. Norbert attended school in Dunkerton and graduated from Dunkerton High School. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving his country in WWII. Norbert was united in marriage to Elizabeth Reisz on August 4, 1952 in Panama, IA. Norbert owned and operated Steffen Farm Supply in New Hampton, retiring in 1985. He enjoyed watching sports especially the Chicago White Sox, gardening and bowling. Norbert was an active member of the New Hampton American Legion, Rotary International, Knights of Columbus and St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Norbert is survived by his wife of 61 years Elizabeth “Betty” Steffen of New Hampton; children Paul (Gretchen) Steffen of Overland Park, KS, David Steffen of New Hampton, Thomas Steffen of New Hampton, and Julie (Mike Ironside) Steffen of Dubuque, IA; grandchildren Sean Steffen and Sarah Steffen and her fiancé Matt; great grandson Cameron Steffen; brothers Sylvester “Pat” (Fely) Steffen of New Hampton, Ralph Steffen of Hoffman Estates, IL, Rev. Arnold Steffen SVD of Papau, New Guinea; sisters-in-law Margaret Steffen of Dunkerton, and Betty Steffen of Ames, IA; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Matilda Steffen; sisters Sister Samuel Steffen, OSF and Sister Justina Steffen, OSF; brothers Vincent, Cletus, Joseph “Richard”, and Alfred; and sisters-in-law Ann Steffen and Lillian Steffen. Cemetery: Burial will be in Calvery Cemetery at New Hampton, IA. Memorials may be directed to Norbert's family. Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00pm on Thursday, March 21, 2013 at Conway-Markham Funeral Home in New Hampton with a rosary at 4:30pm and a scriptural wake service at 5:30pm. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the service. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30am, Friday, March 22, 2013 at Holy Family Parish, St. Joseph’s Center in New Hampton with Father Mark Osterhaus celebrating mass.

  17. Aunt Elizabeth, Paul, Tom, Dave and Julie. We were saddened to hear of Uncle Norb’s passing. I fondly remember your trip to Germany/Belgium with mom and dad to visit us and Uncle Norb’s relatives. Was a wonderful time. We will remember Uncle Norb as a quiet, classy man who loved to laugh.   18. paul and the rest of the steffen family. my condolences to you all. spent some time back in the day at the steffen household in the neighborhood growing up. enjoyed the music paul and the band back then inspired me to learn a few chords on the guitar.
