Robert Eugene Manges was born on April 30, 1924, the son of Harley and Ada Manges in Gilbert, IA. At the age of four his family moved to Hollandale, MN and then to Albert Lea. At the age of 15, Bob began working as an apprentice at a jewelry store in Albert Lea. In1943, Bob left to service his country in the United States Army during WWII. Bob fought during the Battle of the Bulge and the First Occupation in the European Theater, returning home in 1945. Upon his return home, Bob attended and graduated from Kansas City School of Watchmaking in Kansas City, MO. He worked a year in Rochester before taking a job with Jensen’s Jewelry Store in New Hampton on June 19, 1950. It would be December of 1950 when Bob met the love of his life, Jane Snyder on a blind date. The couple were united in marriage on January 4, 1953 at United Methodist Church in New Hampton. Jane and Bob made their home in New Hampton where they raised their son, Steven. On October 1, 1973, they purchased the jewelry store and moved it to its current location in 1976. Bob worked in the jewelry industry for over 80 and enjoyed every minute of it. Outside of the store, Bob was a member of First United Methodist Church. He enjoyed golf, fishing, antique and gun shows. In his younger years, Bob took professional dance lessons on roller skates. Though slowing down in his years, he had the honor of receiving a Quilt of Valor for serving his country and was able to tour Washington D.C. with an Honor Flight. Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Jane Manges of New Hampton, IA; his son, Steve (Deb) Manges of Waterloo, IA; his grandchildren, Troy (Harat) Manges of Terrell, TX, Tonya (Ben) Collins of Blue Earth, MN, Jeremy (Marcia) Treichel of Clive, IA, Shawn (Krissy) Treichel of Newberg, IN, Karisa Treichel, IA, Cody Dewater and Jennifer (Tim) Newell, all of Waterloo, IA; several great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Sandra Schueth of New Hampton, IA and numerous nieces and nephews. 1. My deepest sympathy to you Jane and your family. I always enjoyed visiting with Bob when I came into the store for his help. Bob is now in Heaven with the angels watching over you but I’ll miss not stopping in your store to see you both. Take care and God Bless you, Linda Stolfus

  2. Bob was just the best at fixing watches and jewelry. I’m going to miss having him in the store to take things to. My sympathy to Jane and his family.

  3. I will miss Bob and his legacy of being the jeweler on the corner. He was a true jewelry craftsman. My husband bought my diamond in 1980 and we bought wedding rings in 1981. At my request, Tom never bought me another diamond. Yet every time I went to the jewelry store to get my diamond checked for prongs, he & his wife , Jane, treated me like I was a frequent buyer of jewelry. Both were always accommodating and told me when my ring would be finished. Never more than a day or 2 . As years went on, I saw him frequently walking on the sidewalks around town. Even if he was a little stooped or looked like it might be painful to move, he never quit! What a great business man! My sympathy to Jane and family. Rosie Deutsch

  23. Richard & Mary Jo
Words can never express the wonderful feelings we hold dear to our hearts of Bob Manges. After driving 1100 miles to come back home to visit, Bob was always in the shop behind his desk diligently working on a project, but never too busy to stop and come out with Ma and spend some quality time with us Coloradans. We shared lots of golfing memories, and always got our warm hugs before leaving. We pray for each of the family members and hope as time goes by, the Lord will give each of you comfort.
