Delores H. Shileny, age 84, of New Hampton, IA, formerly of Lawler, IA passed away on Tuesday, October 9, 2018 with her family by her side. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, October 12, 2018 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Lawler, IA with Father Aaron Junge celebrating the mass. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Little Turkey. Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 PM on Thursday, October 11, 2018 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Lawler with a 3:00 PM Rosary and a 3:30 PM Scriptural Wake Service. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the funeral mass on Friday. Delores Helen was born on September 4, 1934 to Joseph and Christina (Kunt) Schmitt in Winneshiek County, IA. She attended Mt. Carmel School and graduated from Lawler High School in 1952. Delores was united in marriage to Norbert Shileny on July 27, 1953 at Assumption Catholic Church in Cresco, IA and followed her love along during his military service. After Norbert’s military career, the couple made their home on a farm north of Lawler until they retired in 1997. They moved to New Hampton, where they’ve lived since. Delores loved being a dealer for Park Lane Jewelry, gardening, baking and cooking (especially poppy seed cake and kolaches), playing cards, casino trips, and making quilts and donating them to various organizations. She was a member of Assumption Catholic Church in Little Turkey, Rosary Society, American Legion Auxiliary, and the Kountry Kitchen Klub. Those left to cherish Delores’s memory are her husband, Norbert Shileny of New Hampton; her children; Mary Jo Clarine of New Hampton, Betty (Denis) Kriener of Ankeny, IA, Donald (Evette) Shileny of Westminster, CO and Joseph C. (Dawn Iverson) of Lawler, IA; her 12 grandchildren, Craig, Joey, John, Alice, Katie, Lisa, Sara, Lisa, Emma, Nicole, Vanessa and Joey; 14 great-grandchildren; her sister, Joyce (Walt) Mrachek of Cresco, IA; her brothers, George (Darene) Schmitt of Cresco, IA, Arlo (Mary Helen) Schmitt of Mable, MN and Joseph (Kay) Schmitt of Sarasota, FL; her sisters-in-law, Eleanor Dostal of New Hampton, Mary Ann Kuennen of Lawler, IA, Rosie Schmitt of Edgar, WI, Darlene Schmitt Kaus of Stratford, WI, Camilla Schmitt of Cresco, IA and Delores Schmitt of Winona, MN; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Marilyn; and her brothers, Edmond (Gladys), Raymond, Walter, Lester, Jerry and Robert.

  5. What a great lady. Norb and Delores were like a second set of parents to the Hurd kids, as we spent a lot of time across the highway at their house growing up. Her poppyseed kolaches were the best! Heaven gained another angel. Norb, Mary Jo, Betty , Dennis, and Joe: you are in my thoughts and prayers. What a privilege to have Delores/your mom in my life.

I remember when we combined crops for them, Delores would make sure you sure did not go home without harvesting on her wonderful cooking! I can visualize her learning the angels new recipes. especially her poppyseed cake! RIP Delores!

  11. We will really miss our backyard neighbor! She was the best friend, Nicest person to all. And what a baker! I cherish the time a few years ago when she taught my sister Micki and me how to make Kolaches. Even as her health failed, she’d call or come across the yard to visit. You all are in our hearts and prayers as we mourn a great lady.
